Bill asked earlier what was positives and negatives about the ID system to a person who is on the outside looking in.
I was thinking what is the pros and cons of US, what common threads do the ID providers have in common. The prospective ID provider would most likely have these things in common.
The largest difference I have noticed about the ID seminar providers, from other seminars and about other professionals that I happen across in daily life:
1. Authenticity- a deep desire to find reality and live in it. Many people have found something to validate their world view that is not reality based, but it allows them to continue without confronting the truth.
2. Humility- knowing the complexity of the human body and our limitations to completely master it, able to accept criticism and grown from it. The challenge to become better is tough, because the first step is to realize you have to grow ‘more’.
3. Positive outlook, responsible for their thoughts- most seminars I had to do (ohio used to make us do them all in state) it always boiled down to a bitch fest about patients, insurance companies, employees etc. Its not tolerated for the most part. (OK- so we all have that frustration when after a brilliant ROF the patient blankly stares and says “ok, so was i out?”)
4. Desire to see everyone else succeed. Its a good bunch of people who generally feel that if one of us wins, we all win. We don’t all whip out our P and L or our ‘stats’ to see who has the biggest whatever.
5. Everyone is non-stop. This is not a hobby or just a job. We get the tough cases because no one else can fix them. If we cannot, most likely the patients life will be altered for the worse.
Anyhow, I am thankful for everything that ID has given me, and will continue to provide. I always return home on sunday night from a seminar not only a better doctor but a better person for being in the same conference room with the ID people.
