In order to eek out some expectations or goals from a patient what is some of your best questions you would ask the patient during the consultation. I am sure there are some good ones out there-

I use “If you had one activity that you cannot do right now due to this problem and wanted to do pain free again what would it be?”

“On a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being best) what do you think your odds are of fixing this problem?”

“What would have to happen for you to feel this problem was completely solved”

I ask them straight forward what their goals are after summarizing their problem. Something like this:

You have had low back pain for 10 years, and you’ve been to 5 different providers with no relief. What are your goals with treatment, activity, or in general? What are you looking to achieve?
